Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has urged Ghana’s government to go beyond the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to handle the country’s present economic issues.
The Ghanaian government initiated formal negotiations with the IMF for economic assistance in July of this year, but according to Kofi Bentil, the government should engage other international financial organizations such as the World Bank if it is to succeed in managing the current economic issues.
“We need more than the IMF. We need to be speaking to the World Bank and friendly nations for concessionary loans to shore up the economy, and then get the IMF to tide us over to health. We should be speaking to them by now, IMF alone can’t help us,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
Ghana has faced significant economic difficulties over the past few months, driving up prices dramatically and depreciating the cedi on the exchange market.
