The Deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister, George Mireku Duker had a community engagement with the good people of Hemang, a mining community within the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern region.
The meeting consisted of various stakeholders, thus, The District Assembly, Chiefs, Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners, District and Regional Officers of the Minerals Commission, Opinion leaders and the members of the community.
This forms part of the measures taken to sensitize and educate communities within mining districts on the impacts of illegal mining on our socioeconomic development as a country.
Hon. Ernest Ofosu, the MCE, in his opening remarks expressed his appreciation to the Ministry for such an engagement, the first of its kind in the District.
The Chief Inspector of Mines at the Minerals Commission, Mr Richard Kofi Adjei, educated the gathering on the negative impact of illegal mining on health, the environment, and the economy.
The Deputy minister passionately charged the gathering to support the Government to fight this menace. I emphasized that a collaborative approach is required to argue Government’s policies to win this war.
Overwhelming suggestions and comments were received from various individuals during the discussion, an indication of an absolute acceptance of the task ahead.
