Artisans of the Ashanti regional association of welders and fabrication have petitioned authorities of Ghana Standard Authority to question importers who import metal the quality and accurate sizes of materials they bring into the country.
According to them, the importers continue to increase prices of metal materials but forgetting about the quality and standard with accurate sizes including the length, breath and thickness of the materials which always affect their standard of craftsmanship.
Speaking to the media during the demonstration in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional chairman for the association, Mr Akwasi Appiah said, the importers of metal materials are taking due advantage of economic crisis in the country to cheat them with substandard and rampant price increments of materials.
He used the occasion to appeal to the authorities, including Ghana standard authority and ministry of trade and industry to intervene in their situation else most of them cannot withstand the challenges and will quit from the business.
He, however, appealed to the general public to always do business with artisans who are certified and registered members of the association with recognition from the government to ensure quality of works and value for money.
Some members of the association also shared their pride about the negative effect on the substandard of metal materials and rampant price increments of materials which has potential to collapse their businesses.
