The Gambian Government through its Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs has announced a new proposed tax on tobacco which indicates an increase in the previous tax.
Excise tax on cigarettes, cigars/cigarillos increases from D30 per pack to D35 per pack.
Environmental tax on cigarettes and cigars from D3.22 per pack to D5.22 per pack.
Excise tax on all other tobacco products from D399/kg to D420/kg and environmental tax on all other tobacco products increase from D185/kg to D200/kg.
An excise tax is a legislated tax on specific goods or services at purchase such as fuel, tobacco, and alcohol.
These proposed tax rates will likely hike the price of tobacco products for smokers.
