In Genesis 11:6-8 we are told “The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language, they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city”.
Once upon a time at creation, we are told the whole world had one language and a common speech. They decided to build a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens. But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building and said “If as one people speaking the same language, if they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other. So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.”
As we mark our first day into 2023, I am led to talk to us about unity, without which nothing that requires collective effort can be meaningfully achieved by us (as in, our family, friends, church and nation). Unity is explained in terms of the state of deliberately being undivided. It doesn’t mean there aren’t going to be dissent. It doesn’t mean there aren’t going to be anger and some healthy fights (not war). It doesn’t mean there won’t be disagreements. It simply means, making a conscious effort to remain undivided in spite of our differences.
According to God Himself, there is nothing we cannot achieve if we unite. The response of God to the unity of man is quite fascinating. He was shaken. So, if the unity of a people, I mean, that simple act of deciding to live or work together and speak the same language about whatever they set out to do, “scared or challenged” the Deity of God, then disunity among us, amounts to we sitting on a goldmine in our quest to develop.
There is no need for protracted commentary on unity, for in it lies strength and achievements. Regardless of the many factors that could hamper it, let its potency compel us to resolve to be undivided in our family, in our church and in our nation. For with this, nothing we set out to do, will be undoable. In all human activity that require collective efforts, we must regardless of our differences, learn to speak the same language as those constructing the Towers of Babel did. If we fail to speak the same language in our quest to build, develop or improve how things ought to be done at all levels of our human engagement and activity, we would be scattered and we will be sabotaging ourselves in a manner that would undermine meaningful achievements collectively and individually.
So, in spite of our differences, in 2023, let us deliberately decide not to be divided as family members, friends, church, community and a nation.
The Lord Help us and Happy New Year to all.
