All is set for the 35th Edition of the 2019 Farmers day celebrations on the theme “Enhancing Small Scale Agriculture Towards Agribusiness Development”.
The 35th edition of the National Farmers Day slated for Friday, December 6th in Ho, Volta Regional capital.
The government intends to gradually shift the focus of Agriculture in Ghana from a subsistence farming to agri-business using the 2019 national Farmers day as a starting point.
Additionally, there is a change in the traditional system of awarding a house to the best farmer. This year, the National best farmer will take home a cash prize. The government will further expect the winner to submit a business plan to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. As per the business plan, the best farmer will have his farms expanded to also provide jobs for others.
Dr. John Kofi Mensah, Managing Director, ADB, re-affirmed the Bank’s commitment to give $100,000 to the 2019 National Best Farmer and reminded the award winners that ADB remained the only bank.
Farmers’ Day was instituted by the Government in 1985 in recognition of the vital role farmers and fishers play in the economy especially the highly commendable output of farmers and fishermen in 1984.
This was after the bad agricultural years of 1982 and 1983.
