Morocco will not participate in the upcoming 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after pulling out 24 hours to start of the tournament in Algeria.
The defending champions who were housed in the same group as the Black Galaxies have decided to withdraw from the tournament which is set to start on Friday, January 13, 2023.
Morocco in an official statement has announced it will not participate in the tournament due to flight issues between them and the host country, Algeria.
It is said Algeria has denied Morocco access to fly directly into their country with their own flights despite seeking all legit permits surrounding the circumstances.
Morocco is the holder of the competition and has in fact emerged champions of the last two editions; the ‘host and win’ in 2018 before humbling Mali to clinch the last episode in Cameroon.
The Atlas Lions are in the same group as Ghana and as it stands the West African nation will be left with only two countries (Sudan and Madagascar) in Group C, with just a day to the start of the competition.
However, the Confederation of African Football are yet to communicate the way forward as to whether they will be replacing them with a new country or not.
