The reason why the cane will forever remain king in disciplining Ghanaian school children is because there are no spelt out code of conduct or rules in schools in Ghana by GES. Even if there is any, GES does not enforce them.
That’s why a student will disrespect or insult a teacher and still go scot-free because they even insult a whole president on social media and still go unpunished and even received clemency from the president himself.
That’s how bad we are encouraging and tolerating misbehavior from students.
We are not raising our school children well.
Without rules for sanctions and punishment in our schools the cane will forever remain the rule of discipline and order in schools.
Until GES enforce code of conduct and sanctions and punishment in schools, there won’t be an alternative discipline tool aside the cane.
GES will say teachers should refer to positive discipline tools, we want sanctions and punishment that will reform students not the ones that still encourage their bad behavior.
What is the punishment for:
Lateness to school
Disobedience
Bullying
Fighting
Not Doing homework
Disrespecting teachers
Stealing
Swerving class
Truancy
Not coperating in class
Refusal to do assignments
Improper dressing or haircut
Insubordination
Disturbing in class
Flirting in school
Poor academic performance
GES should come out with the appropriate sanctions and punishment for students because the students themselves don’t know the rules and consequences for breaking them not to talk of the teachers.
If students know the rules of the schools and their corresponding punishment there will learn to behave well and there will be peace and sanity in schools.
Teachers don’t know the punishment to apply when face with indiscipline from students hence some resort to the cane.
Teachers want to refrain from using the cane but they don’t know the best effective discipline measure or rules to enforce.
GES should educate the public, parents, students and teachers on school rules and regulations so that all parties will be aware of what to expect in case there is break of any school rule.
Even in the bible there is the 10 commandments so GES should bring the commandments for schools and shun that saying of don’t use the cane but use positive discipline tools like counseling etc.
