Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The day marks the liberation of the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and is the day where Denmark together with the world commemorates the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust – and victims of other genocides.
This year, Auschwitz-day also marks the 80th anniversary of the rescue of the majority of Danish Jews in October 1943. Spurred by Hitler’s order to deport all Danish Jews into Nazi concentration camps, a spontaneous, joint and risky rescue mission was launched among Danes and Swedes alike.
Based on an act of solidarity, humanity, citizenship and cooperation across borders, more than 7,000 Danish Jews were sailed to safety in Sweden. Meanwhile, close to 500 Danish Jews were caught during their escape and sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp.
Our best tribute to all victims of the Holocaust – those who died and to those who survived – is to continue to work together to create a world where we protect the facts and the mindset of humanity.
The victims – Jews and non-Jews – will always be cherished and remembered, not only by Denmark but by the world.
