Kwaku Agyeman Manu, Minister of Health, negotiations with Cabinet regarding fees to be assessed for some services provided by the National Ambulance Service are still underway.
The costs, according to the sector minister, would be used to pay for the ambulances’ fuel, which is sometimes a challenge for the emergency agency.
Speaking during the service’s governing board’s inauguration, Kwaku Agyeman Manu expressed optimism that the idea will be quickly approved by Cabinet and put into action.
“Those in the field are talking about fuel, it’s becoming very topical amongst the ministry, directors, and ambulance service people. We charge for services to enable us find money to make sure that we always have fuel, in view of inadequate budgetary allocations for fuel.
“This is something we are still discussing, we haven’t made a decision yet. The last time we went to Cabinet, they asked us to come back and define the type of our services that can attract fees because we said non-emergency services. The cabinet was not comfortable they wanted us to be very specific such that people who need ambulances can afford and call for ambulances,” Minister for Health said.
