LET’S DO SOME SIMPLE LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS HERE
- Sentence one says, “I don’t have time for things like that”. This statement came as a response to Gabby’s insulting tweet. What is clear here is that, her ladyship was making reference to the owner of the tweet which was Gabby. The ‘things’ in that sentence is a derisive reply that deprives Gabby of any human trait. It means that the attitude exhibited by Gabby doesn’t present him as human possessing proper thought hence, he is a ‘thing’ which is generally known to be inanimate. Figuratively, Gabby is metaphorically a thing by this statement of her ladyship the former CJ.
- Sentence two says “people like that are not important to me or my life”. Here, she intelligently chooses to use the word ‘people’ which is human, as a personification to her earlier ‘things’ which is not human. Her address of the ‘things’ in sentence one as ‘people’ in sentence two is simply what is called PERSONIFICATION in literature. She’s done that to assuage the pains of Gabby and his likes if they don’t understand that she’s only using it to personify the ‘things’ she referred to in sentence one.
- Finally, sentence three says “he is a disturbance”. Simply, ‘he’ in this sentence is a pronoun for Gabby. What she therefore means is that, throughout Gabby’s life, he’s never been a better person to humanity than one who incessantly disturbs people with his nauseatingly inanimate character.
