Throughout this week, PharmAccess and Leapfrog to Value (L2V) together with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and, the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) are attending a workshop to develop and pilot new value-based care (VBC) models.
The workshop will analyse NHIA claims payment data, select a care pathway, and develop measurement tools based on a human-centered approach to delivering healthcare with its corresponding payment incentives to make the model viable and sustainable.
The model will be piloted, and its outcomes documented for further review and possible adoption in time.
Value-based care is a concept that aligns patients, payers, and providers around a common goal thereby achieving outcomes that matter to patients at optimal cost.
Whereas Ghana, like other lower-middle-income countries (LMIC’s), has established health insurance schemes to achieve universal health coverage (UHC), the scheme largely rewards the volume of healthcare delivered rather than health outcomes.
Adhering to this path may create long-lasting structural flaws which may increase costs without necessarily delivering the desired results. In line with global best practices, participants will at this workshop explore a different trajectory to build a human-centered health system that will generate better long-term value for Ghanaian society.
The workshop will wrap up its work on Friday 17th February 2023. In attendance are Dr. Okoe Boye, NHIA Chief Executive, and his Deputy in charge of Operations, Mrs. Vivian Addo Cobbiah, the Executive Director, CHAG, Mr. Peter Yeboah, and his Deputy, Dr. Maxwell Antwi, Country Director, PharmAccess and some Directors and staff from the NHIA, CHAG, and PharmAcess.
