Caretaker Minister for Trade and Industry, Samuel Abu Jinapor delivered in Parliament, on behalf of President Akufo-Addo, a policy statement on Consumer Protection in Ghana, one of the most important right issues in a free market like ours.
Since the reign of King Edgar, in the 10th century , governments have been concerned with issues of fair trade and consumer protection. Unfortunately, Ghana’s current legal and regulatory framework for consumer protection remains inadequate and uncoordinated, with fragmented legislation and different regulatory bodies.
The Ministry for Trade and Industry, under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo, has developed a Consumer Protection Bill to protect, secure and defend the rights of consumers, through a structured institutional mechanism and legal framework that will ensure that consumers play a significant role in keeping erring businesses in check, promote competition and ensure regional integration through digital trade and e-commerce.
The Bill, which will be submitted to Cabinet soon, and if approved, will also create a Consumer Protection Authority to facilitate consumer redress, establish codes of practice on advertising and labeling, educate consumers on their rights, strengthen consumer-oriented organisations, and ensure effective representation of consumers on decision-making bodies.
Government will continue to work with all relevant agencies, including Parliament, to ensure the speedy passage of this very consequential legislation.
Later in the day, in the company of the Greater Accra Regional Minister and officials of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Lands Commission, the Caretaker engaged the Chiefs and Elders of Nungua Traditional Area, led by the Nungua Mantse, Professor Oboade Notse King Odaifio Welentsi III, and the Gborbu Wulomo, Shitse Borketey Laweh Tsuru, on the effective and efficient administration of land within the Nungua Traditional Area, particularly in respect of public lands and the Sakumono Ramsar Site.
He assured them of Government’s commitment to work with them for the efficient management of lands in the country, for the mutual benefit of Government and traditional authorities.
He stated “Our commitment, as Government, is to the Ghanaian people, the true owners of the lands and natural resources of our country, and we will continue to work will all stakeholders to ensure that the lands and natural resources of our country enure to the benefit of the people of Ghana”.
