Despite taking part in the vetting process, the minority caucus in Parliament is maintaining its stance that none of the cabinet nominations should be approved.
The Minority had announced on Monday they would not support any of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s nominees for any of the open government positions.
The choice was made in response to a request from Fiifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), that the minority members of the Appointments Committee reject each and every candidate based on the large size of the government.
However, several members of the public had hoped that after taking part in the two-day screening process and specifically questioning some of the appointments for extended duration, the viewpoint of the Minority would be changed.
On Tuesday, the majority caucus in parliament appealed to both the minority caucus and the National Democratic Congress to reverse their decision to reject the new ministerial appointees.
Speaking to the media, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the majority chief whip, urged the NDC and its parliamentarians to support the nomination of the ministerial candidates.
“I just want our colleagues to understand that for the sake of unity, and the desire for us to forge a working relationship, this is their major decision. In terms of the fact that they are coming into leadership, this is the first time more or less they are going to make such a significant decision”.
“We stated earlier initially that it has nothing to do with the personalities. We also stated that it was based on principles and that the country’s debt levels were unsustainable and government should find a way of realigning ministries.
“As we speak, there is no movement in terms of our decision not to support at this stage, so nothing has changed in our position about approval or disapproval of the nominees.”
