President Akufo-Addo has emphatically stated that Ghana’s economy was thriving before the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war broke out.
He asserted that the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Managing Director had acknowledged this reality.
Mr. Akufo-Addo claimed that certain people are reluctant to accept the truth that the economy is performing well because they are trying to get a political advantage.
He made this assertion during his the State of the Nation Address Wednesday, March 8 that “I have said, and the Managing Director of the IMF has also said, our economy was doing well until COVID-19 and Russia Ukraine war.”
He previously stated that the economy was seriously challenged when he took office on January 7, 2017, and that the rate of growth at the time was the lowest in more than 20 years.
But, he claimed, through perseverance, wisdom, and ingenuity, the government was able to turn things around, building an economy that, in the years leading up to the COVID-19, 2017, 2018, and 2019, was among the fastest growing in the world and among the fastest growing in Africa, with an annual Gross Domestic Growth (GDP) growth rate of 7%.
