The New Juaben north municipal assembly in collaboration with the Agric department and the Regional office of the Centre for national culture have embarked on a program to sensitise the public on the need to patronise local food.
Participants were also taught how to make some local drinks that are rich in nutrients and good for our health system.
A nutritionist with the Agric department, Hajia Yusif Habib at an event to teach women farmers on the benefits of eating local foods at Effiduase, advised Ghanaians to patronise local based foods and drinks instead of relying heavily on foreign foodstuffs.
She was of the view that, local foods contain the needed nutrients needed for the body to grow well and also protect it from many diseases that comes with constant usage of foreign foods.
“I will continue to urge Ghanaians to have taste for local foods since they contain the necessary ingredients that the body needs to grow well. Too much of noodles and others will rather affect our health negatively” she stated.
The Regional Director for Centre for National Culture, Mr. Peter Marfo on his part emphasised on the need to promote our national identity by patronising local foods and products at all times.
He indicated that patronising local products will in turn boost the country’s economy and also provide opportunities to farmers, sellers and other stakeholders whose activities would earned them a living at the long run.
“When we buy local foods and products, it will benefit our farmers, traders, drivers and all stakeholders who will one way or the other earn something for provision of their services. We must eat kontomire and other vegetables that are already rich in nutrients the body needs” Mr. Marfo stressed.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive Madam Comfort Asante was happy with the high rate of attendance and commended participants for taking part.
She urged the public to be health conscious by ensuring they eat more of our local foods due to the requisite ingredients they contain.
According to her, her outfit would make the event an annual one to ensure many people in the area are brought on board to be educated on the need to eat local foods and other products.
Participants expressed gratitude to organisers for such an event and indicated it has been beneficial to them as they have learnt a lot on the importance of patronising local foods.
