The mass registration exercise at Betom near RIIS School in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern region was disrupted by a man claiming to have paid GH₵2 bribe to an unknown official of the National Identification Authority(NIA).
The man who didn’t understand why he should be in the queue having paid alleged GH₵2 bribe, caused a commotion at the registration center Friday, March 20, 2016, bringing the exercise to a temporal halt.
It took the intervention of Police Personnel led by the Station Officer of Central Police Station, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Sakyi, to restore order.
During interrogation, the man failed to name the exact NIA official he claimed to have collected GH₵2 to facilitate his registration.
The suspect was subsequently sacked from the registration center by the Police and warned to be of good behavior.
Officials of the NIA at the Registration center were worried over the baseless allegation leveled against them saying it could lead to a query.
They were, therefore, impressing on the Police to arrest the suspect.
Pressure continues to mount on the NIA to halt the mass registration exercise ongoing in the Eastern Region following 16 confirmed cases of coronavirus but the NIA is adamant.
