The Eastern Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Mr Kwame Appiah Kodua has stated that the organization is mainly focused on education to eradicate disaster in the country.
According to the Eastern Regional Director, disasters have over the years destroyed the majority of Ghanaians properties and there is a need to educate the public on disaster to help reduce disaster occurrences.
‘‘Our new dimension is to create and ensure awareness, intensive education, intensive community entry, intensive sensitization and one-on-one talks at the various community’s level,’’ said Mr Appiah Kodua.
He continued that the organisation is creating awareness on disasters through intensive public education, ensuring disaster prevention, risk and vulnerability reduction, as a means of reducing the impact of disasters on society and assisting and motivating community-based organizations to serve as the credible voluntary organizations to assist in the prevention and management of disasters at the local level.
Speaking in an interview with Nhyiraba Nartey Solomon of Bryt FM, Mr. Appiah Kodua stated categorically that government cannot provide 100% of properties lost as a result of disaster adding that the government can provide only 5% to affected victims.
Mr Appiah Kodua speaking on the roles of NADMO indicated that their aim is to improve Human and Institutional Capacity, promote Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Risk Management through the establishment of National and Regional Platforms for all Stakeholders.
He added that the government has put strategic measures in place to strengthen Disaster Prevention and Response Mechanisms.
