The Koforidua District Police Command has commenced operation to clamp down on commercial sex workers in the New Juaben South municipality in Eastern region.
The operation backed by the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South Michael Okyere Baafi started Saturday night which about 50 Commercial sex workers were rounded up in brothels,streets and ghettos.
Ninety-Nine percent of the suspects are Nigerians some of whom were trafficked to Koforidua by their pimps to exploit them.
Confirming the arrest when addressing congregation at PIWC-KOFORIDUA Sunday June 11,2023 during climax of the National Youth Week,Hon.Okyere Baafi said prostitution will not be tolerated in Koforidua to destroy the image of the town and decay the moral fiber of the society.
He called on residents particularly landlords to volunteer information about commercial sex workers in their area for action to be taken.
“yesterday I directed the Police to carry out operation in town so yesterday police started the first operation to arrest all those prostitutes who come to our town.so Yesterday l Ieft the central police station around 1:00am.They managed to arrest almost about 50 people .I will make sure they will araigned them before court tomorrow before I leave “
The MP continued that “about 99% are Nigerians they are Ghanaians so they are coming here to dent the good image of Koforidua .Everybody who is doing that business will not be tolerated .if you know any place .Ghetto ,house some may be living in your house if you know such persons if you cannot go to the police station call me”.
Increasing activities of sex traffickers and commercial sex workers in Koforidua have become a concern to many residents in recent years.
The perpetrators operate in brothels. Some of the commercial sex workers are minors mostly trafficked from Nigeria under the guise of being employed in hospitality industry but end up being forced into prostitution on arrival .
