The Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Hon. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, has called for the expansion of local motorcycle production to create more jobs for Ghana’s growing youthful population.
He made the call during a visit to the warehouse of Spiro, an electric motorcycle assembly company, where he commended the company for its contribution to job creation and skills development.
The Minister said the company’s operations demonstrated that job creation was achievable through local manufacturing and practical skills training. “Creating jobs is not rocket science. It is doable,” he said, adding that the Government would provide the necessary support to enable the company to expand its operations.
Hon. Agyekum noted that young Ghanaians, including Junior and Senior High School graduates, were assembling quality motorcycles, demonstrating their capacity to contribute meaningfully to the country’s industrial development. He called for greater local participation in the production of motorcycle components, stressing the need for backward integration to reduce dependence on imported parts.
The Managing Director of Spiro, Mr. Maxwell Dodd, said the company was targeting about 2,000 jobs when its operations reached full capacity. He explained that the company was preparing to deploy electric motorcycles to riders while expanding its battery-swapping network across the country.
According to him, the full-scale rollout, expected to begin in January 2027, would involve the production of 300 motorcycles daily and the deployment of battery-swapping stations, which would operate around the clock.
Mr. Dodd said the initiative would also empower riders to earn between GH¢400 and GH¢500 daily, while saving about 40 per cent on operating costs compared with fuel-powered motorcycles. He added that Spiro was introducing savings and insurance schemes to improve the livelihoods of riders and their families.
Mr. Dodd emphasised that the motorcycles were assembled in Ghana by young people trained and equipped with the skills required to meet high-quality standards. He appealed for continued government support through tax incentives and an enabling environment to facilitate the company’s expansion into other regions.
The visit highlighted the potential of electric mobility to promote local manufacturing, skills development and sustainable employment in Ghana.
