The Government of Ghana has started disbursing social subsidies to eligible households nationwide through the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme of the Ministry of Gender Children & Social Protection (MoGCSP).
LEAP is a social cash transfer program for Ghana’s poorest households with the aim of alleviating poverty by fostering human capital development and smoothing consumption.
Given the hundred percent (100%) increase in the LEAP cash grant:
- one eligible member household will now receive GH¢128.00 instead of GH¢ 64.00,
- two eligible member households will receive GH¢152.00 instead of GH¢ 76.00,
- three eligible member households will now receive GH¢ 176.09 instead of GH¢88.00,
- while households with four and more eligible members will now receive GH¢212.00 instead of GH¢106.00.
All eligible households will get double the usual bimonthly cash stipend due to the joint cycles.
The exercise, which started on Monday 26th June 2023, will include 350,000 beneficiary Households.
In order to carry out the monitoring exercise, MoGCSP has formed teams and assigned them the job of compiling data on various indicators to track Program performances.
Additionally, it will allow the Ministry track payments, and interact with beneficiaries to evaluate the impact of the program in their lives.
The amount paid to a household is determined by the number of eligible household members. The category of persons who make a household eligible are orphan and vulnerable children, elderly- 65years+ without support, persons with severe disabilities who cannot work and pregnant women and mothers with infants under one year.
