Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) representing the South Dayi Constituency, has made fun of the current administration’s and its appointees’ emphasis on the National Identification Authority (NIA) cards, also known as Ghana Cards.
“This superficial importance that they place on this Ghana Card today has to be exposed,” he said on TV3‘s New Day on Tuesday, July 11.
“The Ghana Card offers nothing.”
The NDC MP was responding to assertions made on the program by a member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the Ghana Card has grown to become a crucial source of information for the government’s formulation of public policy.
The Ghana Card, which was operationalized during the first term of the Akufo-Addo-led administration, according to Eric Amoako Twum, who represented the NPP, offers essential data to aid in the formulation of government policies.
Attorney Dafeamekpor, however, asserted that the allegations undervalue government agencies like the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), which has been supplying statistics for use in government operations and decision-making since its beginnings.
“How can you suggest that it is the NIA?” he questioned. “Don’t trivialise these institutions.
“I am shocked to hear the NPP always say that it is the NIA card that is helping them to gather data. How? The NIA card doesn’t give you anything.” he stated.
