Flagbearer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto has emphasised on the need for the party to find alternative ways of generating money instead of depending on government all the time.
He said that was the only way to have a formidable party that can take care of it’s activities and also invest in party supporters.
Speaking to Party Executives and members at Kpong in the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency of the Eastern region on Thursday, Dr. Afriyie Akoto challenged delegates to consider him as the best choice to lead the party in the 2024 general elections.
He pledged to ensure the county’s economy will be based on agriculture and industrialisation as that an transform the current economic system should situation of the country.
He has, however, proposed to ensure the NPP build companies both at national, regional and constituency levels to lobby for contracts and in turn generate money for party businesses.
He added that such interventions would also create employment opportunities for both party members and other Ghanaians across the country.
“Our party does not have good financial standing as at now and that is a great worry for a one of the biggest political parties in Africa. We can’t always depend on government to finance our party, we need to have our own sources of finance as been done by South African All People’s Congress”.
“The ANC has different companies that lobby for government contracts and in turn generate money for party business. That has really made the party popular and I promise I am going to ensure the NPP does same here in Ghana” the Flagbearer hopeful assured.
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto was the former Food and Agriculture minister from 2017-2023 and has been touted as one of the best ministers Ghana has ever had to manage the sector.
The popular planting for food and jobs and many other initiatives introduced under his tenure generated enough food to feed Ghanaians and other African countries even at the time of COVID 19 outbreak.
He is expected to continue his tour of the region on Friday.
