Massive demonstration is scheduled to hit Koforidua on August 19,2023 over bad roads and darkness on the streets in suburb communities such as Apenkwa, Agbogri, Nyamekrom, Monrovia, KTU area, Asokore, Oyoko, Akwaadum,Mpaem, Simpoa Miensa, Zongo, and neighboring areas.
The demonstration is being organized by Koforidua Development Advocates months after it suspended a similar action following intervention by New Juaben Traditional council for the demonstrators to give City authorities grace period to fulfill promise to fix the roads within a period.
On the back of this, the member of Parliament for New Juaben South Michael Okyere Baafi announced that 80% of Koforidua roads had been awarded to contract that,the roads were going to be fixed.
Although portions of the Koforidua town roads have been asphalted ,other roads to the suburb communities continue to deteriorate as the rainy season unleashes incessant rainfalls daily making them almost u motorable.
A statement issued Wednesday August 9,2023 by convener of the demonstration, Agbodo Komla Godsway stated that, “the Koforidua Development Advocates call upon all community members to unite for a non-partisan campaign. It’s time to demand better roads, street lights, and essential amenities for our neighborhoods. We are organizing a peaceful demonstration to press the authorities and make our voices heard”.
The statement said the dangers of Bad Roads and Lack of Street Lights :
1.Pose a significant risk to commuters, pedestrians, and motorists. Pot-holes, cracks, and uneven surfaces increase the likelihood of accidents and injuries.
- Limited Mobility: Bad roads restrict access to essential services like healthcare, education, and markets. This hinders economic growth and development.
- Security Concerns: The absence of street lights creates dark and unsafe areas, making it easier for criminals to operate, threatening the safety of our community members.
- Health Impact: Dust and debris from unpaved roads contribute to respiratory problems, especially for children and the elderly.
- Economic Loss: Inadequate infrastructure discourages potential investors and businesses, hindering the overall progress of the community.
The conveners urged all to ” unite and stand together to demand better living conditions for everyone.
