The Electoral Commission in Upper Manya Krobo district in Eastern region is struggling to register all applicants turning out in their numbers from far and near villages to register in the ongoing voters registration exercise.
Dozens of applicants are left stranded everyday for inability to be registered.
On Tuesday September 12, 2023 which is the first day of the exercise, only 28 applicants were registered due to network challenges and power outage.
On the second day only 85 out of about over 150 applicants who traveled about 2 hours from their villages to the registration center were able to register leaving others stranded.
On the third day, 95 out of over 300 applicants were registered.
As at 4:50pm today Friday, only 82 out of over 150 have have been registered.
Many of the applicants unable to be registered have to find places to sleep having been given numbers by EC officials to return the following morning.
The stranded applicants had to perch with friends and extended family members to pass the night whereas others sleep in the open.
The Opposition National Democratic Congress and the ruling New Patriotic Party have been hiring vehicles to transport some of the applicants ,forced to provide food and accomodation to some of the stranded applicants.
At New Juaben South municipality ,the story of network challenges is not different. EC officials have been using both online and offline system to register.
At the end of four day of registration ,a total of 464 applicants successfully registered.
