The National Chairman of opposition National Democratic Congress ( NDC)Johnson Asiedu Nketia has criticized President Akufo Addo for his political statement to flood victims in the Volta Region.
President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday, October 16, stirred controversy when he subtly reminded some victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage at Mepe in the Volta Region about the fact that he had visited to sympathise with them regardless of the fact that the residents there do not vote for his party.
However ,according to Johnson Asiedu Nketia supporting victims of the flood Disaster is not a favor but a statutory obligation.
He said forefathers of the affected communities sacrificed their lands and ancestoral homes for the construction of the Akosombo dam for Ghana to get power generation therefore they deserve to be helped in this difficult time occasioned by mismanagement of the Akosombo Dam
Controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams initiated by the Volta River Authority (VRA) on September 15, 2023, has intensified over recent days, leading to widespread displacement in communities downstream. Estimated 26,000 persons affected.
An Inter-Ministerial Committee has been formed to manage the disaster.
NDC’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, highlighted the unprecedented nature of this disaster, as it’s the first of its kind since the Akosombo Dam’s construction in 1963.
He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into its causes.
Mr.Johnson Asiedu Nketia said this when he joined the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman Thomas Ampem Nyarko to distribute relief items such as bags of rice, cooking oil, bottled water among others donated by former President John Dramani to the affected communities in the Constituency.
The Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman Thomas Ampem Nyarko added monies to the relief items to the victims in the various communities.
He urged residents along the volta river to desist from fetching water from the river for consumption or bathing without boiling it since according to heath experts ,the river is infested with Schistosoma parasites that causes schistosomiasis disease.
He hastened to add that the parasites were found some weeks before the spillage.
