The largest opposition party the National Democratic Congress (NDC) demanding investigation into the Akosombo Dam Spillage disaster.
On September 15, 2023, the Volta River Authority (VRA) initiated controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams in response to the rising water levels upstream, triggered by heavy rainfall. However, this controlled spillage has intensified in recent days, leading to the displacement of around 26,000 residents in numerous communities.
An Inter-Ministerial Committee has been established to coordinate government effort to manage the disaster.
National Chairman of the opposition NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketia says the spillage disaster is unprecedented since the construction of the Dam in 1963.
He said the Akosombo dam was spilled in 2010 but never wreak such severe havoc to communities therefore the NDC will push for investigation into the cause of the disaster.
Mr.Johnson Asiedu Nketia said this when he joined the Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman Thomas Ampem Nyarko to distribute relief items such as bags of rice , cooking oil, bottled water ,sugar among others from former President John Dramani to the affected communities in the Constituency.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia rebuked President Akufo Addo for stating that,if government had considered votes the rulling NPP gets from the affected communities ,it wouldn’t have extended support to the victims.
According to Johnson Asiedu Nketia supporting victims of the flood Disaster is not a favor but a statutory obligation.
He said forefathers in the area sacrificed their lands and ancestoral homes for the construction of the Akosombo dam for Ghana to get power therefore deserve to helped in this difficult times without political affiliation.
The Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman Thomas Ampem Nyarko added monies to the relief items to the victims .
He urged residents along the volta lake to steer clear from fetching water for consumption or bathing without boiling it since according to heath experts ,the river is infected with Schistosoma parasites that causes schistosomiasis disease.
He hastened to add that the parasites were found some weeks before the spillage.
Some of the victims lamented that weeks after being displaced National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has not come to their aide.
