Nana Kwabena Ofori II, the Chief of Akyem Akroso in the Eastern Region, has expressed his anger at Metro Lens Newspaper for publishing false information about an assault on a Peace FM Presenter.
In light of this, he is demanding a retraction and an apology from the media house within the next three days.
The Chief vehemently refuted claims that the Accra-based Peace FM presenter, Michael Botwe, popularly known as “Micky the Double Darling,” was assaulted during a durbar to culminate the Atwea Festival in the community over the weekend.
Nana Kwabena Ofori II firmly exonerated Mr. Alex Owusu Adjei, a parliamentary aspirant of the ruling New Patriotic Party in the Asene Manso Akroso constituency, who had been accused in the publications of leading thugs to attack the radio presenter, who was the MC for the traditional ceremony.
Short disagreement arose when Micky Darling declined to acknowledge the presence of Alex Owusu Adjei, a gesture he had also made for the Member of Parliament for the area, George Kwame Aboagye, and the District Chief Executive.
Furthermore, he was hesitant to allow Mr. Adjei to speak at the event, citing that he was not listed as a speaker on the program.
When Mr. Adjei finally had an opportunity to address the durbar, with the intervention of the chief, Micky Darling allegedly interrupted him multiple times, demanding that he proceed directly to mention his donation to support a health project fundraising.
In response, Mr. Adjei cut short his speech to make a donation of Ghc10,000.
These interruptions did not sit well with supporters of the aspirant, who questioned why the MC was behaving in this manner toward Mr. Adjei.
Micky Darling has also denied being assaulted by Mr. Alex Adjei and his supporters.
In an address to the media on Monday, October 24, 2023 at the palace, Chief of Akyem Akroso Nana Kwabena Ofori II admitted that they were all dissatisfied with the MC’s conduct; however, he stressed that nobody assaulted him.
Nana Kwabena Ofori II made it clear that he would never condone any form of violence against a journalist on his land, emphasizing his appreciation for the role of journalists as the fourth estate of the realm.
Consequently, he has called on media houses that published what he described as false news to issue retractions and apologize to avoid potential repercussions.
Solomon Obeng Asante, the campaign manager for Mr. Alex Owusu Adjei, believes that the entire episode was politically orchestrated to tarnish Mr. Adjei’s hard-earned reputation, an assertion that he insists will not stand.
Sources say, Mr.Alex Owusu Adjei is considering legal action against media houses and portals that allegedly connived to make the false publication, ostensibly to clear his name.
