Liberia’s outgoing President, George Weah, addressed the nation, acknowledging, “The Liberian people have spoken, and we have heard their voice.”
President Weah confirmed having a conversation with Joseph Boakai, whom he referred to as the ‘president-elect.’
According to the country’s electoral commission, 78-year-old Joseph Boakai secured 50.89% of the votes, while President Weah garnered 49.11%.
President Weah said the closeness of the race “reveals a deep division within our country” and called on Liberians to work together to find common ground.
“Unity is paramount for mama Liberia,” he added.
