Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi, has launched a groundbreaking initiative to address poor toilet facilities in Public Basic Schools in the municipality.
The MP on Monday November 20,2023 cut sod for the construction of 12-seater modern washroom facility at RIIS Presbyterian Model Basic School in Koforidua.
Hon. Okyere Baafi is leveraging support from the National Lotteries Authority (NLA) to fund the construction of the washroom project.
During a brief sod-cutting ceremony, Hon. Okyere Baafi emphasized the significance of functional water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) systems in schools. He stressed that these amenities are not only necessities for safe health but also fundamental determinants of students’ well-being, acting as incentives for better educational outcomes.
The Deputy Minister for Trades and Industry assured the public that the project would be completed within the next three months, providing immediate relief to students grappling with the lack of proper toilet facility.
He explained that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance sanitation in schools across the municipality, with a specific focus on addressing the needs of the girl child.
Mustapha Haruna Appiah, the New Juaben South Municipal Education Director, commended Hon. Okyere Baafi for his unwavering support for education in the municipality.
While acknowledging the relatively acceptable sanitary situation in public basic schools, Mr. Appiah stressed the need for ongoing improvements and expansions to accommodate the increasing student population.
