The chiefs and elders of Mangoase community in Asuogyaman district in Eastern Region have voiced their concerns over the candidacy of Mr. Akonnor Asamani, a candidate in the upcoming unit committee election.
Expressing apprehensions regarding Asamani’s eligibility, the community leaders, led by Odikro Sanaaba Kwafo IV, have officially written to the Electoral Commissioner of the Asuogyaman District in the Eastern Region.
The letter emphasizes the documented history of criminal convictions associated with Mr. Akonnor Asamani, raising questions about his suitability for public office.
The chiefs underscored the necessity for a thorough evaluation of candidates, especially those with a criminal record, to uphold the integrity of the democratic process.
The Mangoase community leaders have urged the Electoral Commission to conduct a comprehensive investigation into Asamani’s eligibility, seeking clarity on whether his past criminal activities disqualify him from participating in the elections.
Expressing confidence in the diligence of the Electoral Commission, they stress the importance of prompt attention to maintain public trust and ensure a fair and transparent electoral system.
This development introduces a layer of complexity to the upcoming unit committee election, as the candidate’s eligibility comes under scrutiny. Despite the chiefs’ concerns, the Electoral Commission has not taken immediate action.
Notable community leaders, including Mr. Bismark Asante (Sompahene) and Mr. Kwame Darko (Sripi), have declared that they will not collaborate with the unit committee member should he emerge victorious. The District Level Elections, featuring a fierce competition with 66,257 candidates across 6,215 electoral areas, are scheduled for today, December 19.
Hon. Dan Botwe, the Minister for Local Government Decentralization and Rural Development, has urged citizens to actively participate in these critical elections.
Expressing concern over declining voter turnout since 1998, he has set a target of achieving a minimum 50% voter turnout for this year’s elections.
