The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah on Monday, April 6, 2020, donated Veronica Hand washing Buckets, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, Liquid soaps and Tissue Papers to market women in Five Markets and drivers in four lorry stations in the New Juaben South Constituency.
The beneficiary market centers are Central Market, Juaben Serwaa market, Agartha Market, Zongo Market, Timber Market. The lorry stations are Main Taxi rank, Trotro station, and Jackson park taxi rank.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah said it is important for Ghanaians to make regular hand washing with soap under running water, a habit beyond Coronavirus Pandemic to help reduce the spread of diseases.
He explained that 80% of basic illnesses could be avoided with frequent hand washing because the hands are the principal carriers of disease-causing germs.
He explained that, many illnesses begin when hands are contaminated with disease-causing viruses and bacteria mostly after contacting human excreta, handshaking contaminated hands, touching infectious surfaces and fomites.
He said frequent hand washing is the most cost-effective basic disease prevention regime necessary to improving the health of the citizenry. “We must sustain and consolidate gains made in the area of frequent hand washing with soap under running water beyond COVID-19 and make it a habit because many diseases could be prevented with this basic daily practice”. He said.
Statistics by UNICEF indicate that 40 percent of the World’s Population, or 3 billion people, do not have a hand washing facility with Water and Soap at home. Nearly three-quarters of the people in the least developed countries lack basic hand washing facilities at home. In Sub-Sahara Africa, 63% of people in urban areas, or 258 million people, lack access to hand washing.
The Coronavirus Pandemic has increased global awareness on the effectiveness of frequent hand washing with soap under running water in preventing infections.
Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah who is Chairman of the Finance and Agriculture Committees in Parliament and Member of the Economic Management Team of government said this when he Presented quantities urged his constituents to make hand hygiene practice a habit.
He pledged his commitment to ensuring that New Juaben South constituency becomes a model of hand hygiene practice in Ghana to help improve the wellbeing of the people.
