Tensions escalate in Teacher Mante, a farming community in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region, as angry youth vehemently protest the alleged sale of their community cemetery to a developer.
The cemetery, graded under the cover of darkness with some graves already excavated, has triggered outrage among residents, compounding concerns over land grabbing and the indiscriminate sale of public cemeteries along the Nsawam to Suhum stretch of the Accra to Kumasi Highway.
Undeterred, the Teacher Mante community has vowed to resist any project on the contested cemetery grounds.
In a second protest within a week, demonstrators this time stormed the chief’s palace.
Baamuhene Nana Oheneaku Asamaning who led the demonstrators said as someone with the traditional responsibility to oversee the cemetery, he has no knowledge of the purported sale.
However, Chief of Teacher Mante , Barima Okofo Gyekye Mante staunchly refutes the allegations of the cemetery’s sale, asserting that he would not oversee any such transaction involving the public cemetery.
He said, the front of the cemetery was however given to an individual to mount a temporal container shop.
He issued a warning to the protesting youth, urging them not to tarnish the name of Okyenhene, as he maintains no involvement in the matter.
