Tensions flared between students of Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH) and New Juaben Senior High School (NUJUASCO) following an inter-school sports competition, prompting police intervention to avert potential violent clashes.
The longstanding rivalry between SECTECH and NUJUASCO has been a recurring issue, often resulting in injurious confrontations and property damage.
Wednesday’s incident occurred after the inter-school sports event at the Koforidua Youth Resource Center, where students from both schools allegedly planned to attack each other upon returning to their campuses.
Prompt police action, based on intelligence, prevented the situation from escalating.
NUJUASCO students were escorted by police to their school amid attempts by some SECTECH students to hurl stones.
To ensure the safety of SECTECH students, police redirected their route, opting for the Gallaway Road instead of the Adweso SSNIT road to their school.
The swift intervention by the Eastern Regional Police headquarters helped diffuse tensions and prevent potential violence between SECTECH and NUJUASCO students.
However, the incident underscores the need for sustained efforts to address the underlying causes of the rivalry and promote peace among the student communities.
The Inter-schools sports competition continues until Friday.
