The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Ghana Education Service (GES),has organized a three-day capacity building workshop for science and mathematics teachers in New Juaben South Municipality, Eastern Region.
The workshop, held from April 17-19, 2024, aimed to enhance teaching practices and improve learning outcomes in the region.
The workshop provided teachers with hands-on training in the use of topic-based Teaching Learning Resources (TLRs), practical teaching methods, lesson planning, and activity-based, learner-centered approaches. Inclusivity and gender equality were also emphasized.
Teachers participated in activities such as group work, lesson presentations, and assessments of teaching methodologies.
They underwent aptitude tests on science and math topics to gauge their understanding and progress.
The workshop was facilitated by Mrs. Olivia Serwaa Opare, Director of the Science Education Unit at GES, Mustapha Haruna Appiah, Municipal Director of Education, Hajia Rukaya Issah, KOICA’s Focal Person, Madam Louisa Amanor, STEM Coordinator for New Juaben South, and other regional math and science coordinators.
Mrs. Opare highlighted the importance of equipping teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to improve student performance in science and math subjects, often seen as challenging by students in the area.
She stressed the need to modernize teaching methods in line with international best practices to realize the vision of STEM education in Ghana.
Hajia Issah noted that since its inception in the municipality, KOICA’s initiatives have improved student performance, particularly among female students in science and math.
She expressed optimism that the workshop and future KOICA programs will contribute significantly to achieving the initiative’s objectives.
