The Concerned Alumni of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) have raised serious concerns regarding the legitimacy of Mr. Samuel Danso Akoto’s position as President of the UCC Alumni Association and his role during conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degree by the University.
In a press release signed by Ernest Koomson, the convener of the Concerned Alumni group, described the extension of Mr. Akoto’s expired term of office as being against the Association’s Constitution.
The group praised the University’s decision to award an Honorary Doctorate Degree to Osabarima Dr. Kwesi Atta II, the paramount Chief of Oguaa Traditional Area.
However, they questioned Mr. Akoto’s authority to administer the Alumni Oath, given the controversy surrounding his extended term.
The group emphasized that Mr. Akoto’s term as National Alumni President ended on November 29, 2023.
They claim that since no elections were held to elect a new executive, Mr. Akoto’s continued leadership and administration of Alumni Oaths to graduates are both unconstitutional and illegal.
“A body made up of Regional Presidents, purporting to be the highest decision-making body without any constitutional backing, extended Mr. Akoto’s term in clear violation of the Association’s Constitution,” the group stated.
The Concerned Alumni is requesting that the University Council and the Minister of Education revoke Mr. Akoto’s recognition as a member of the Governing Council, citing the potential impact on the legitimacy of decisions made by the Council involving Mr. Akoto.
The group called for the Ministry of Education, Chancellor, University Council, University Management, Students, and all Alumni to take measures to ensure that Mr. Akoto, described as a former distance education student of the University, does not cause disorder within the institution.
