A former police officer attached to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in Koforidua, Corporal Emmanuel Nyame, wanted by police since 2019 after being accused of defiling a 13-year-old girl has been arrested.
He was arrested at Kotoka International Airport upon his return from Dubai.
Following his initial arrest in 2019 ,Nyame was granted bail by the Koforidua Circuit Court “B”.
However, he jumped bail and went into hiding, deactivating his mobile phone numbers.
The prosecution, led by Regional State Attorney Mrs. Emily Addo- Kyereh, detailed the case against Nyame.
According to her,On April 11, 2019, while the victim’s aunt whom Nyame was dating had left home to attend a funeral, the Police officer, Emmanuel Nyame took the victim into his car under the pretext of running an errand.
He then took her to a Timberland drinking spot and later to his room at Nsukwao Police Barracks, where he allegedly defiled her.
The victim reported the incident to her relatives, and her father subsequently lodged a complaint with the police.
Nyame denied the offense in his initial statement, but a medical examination corroborated the victim’s account.
After a bench warrant was issued for his arrest, it was discovered that Nyame had fled the country to Togo and then Dubai.
The Ghana Police Service after interdiction subsequently dismissed him from the service.
He was declared wanted which his information sent to the Ghana Immigration Service.
Upon his return to Ghana on June 21,2024, he was arrested at the airport by immigration officials and handed over to the police.
He has been arraigned before Koforidua High Court since the presiding judge of the Circuit Court was indisposed .
His plea was however not taken after prosecution argued that the case was pending at the Circuit Court.
On Monday July 8,2024 the High Court Judge His Lordship Georgi Krofa Addae ruled that the accused still remain in custody until
July 27.
