The Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Education Directorate has successfully held its teachers’ award program.
The last time such award was held is 14 years ago due to lack of sponsorship and planning.
The award aimed to motivate both teaching and non-teaching staff to enhance their performance and improve educational outcomes in the municipality.
The award ceremony, which took place amid much anticipation, seeks to inspire educators to strive for excellence, ultimately benefiting students’ academic achievements.
According to the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Director of Education, Samuel Tettey, in 2021, the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) performance in Lower Manya Krobo was 51.25%, placing the district 31st out of 33 districts and municipalities.
However, concerted efforts have led to significant improvements, with performance rising to 59.8% in 2022 and 63.10% in 2023. This year, the municipality is ambitiously targeting a 73% success rate.
He believes the award will motivate teachers in the municipality to do more to achieve this aim.
The ceremony recognized excellence in 34 main award categories, alongside 10 consolation prizes and 8 special awards.
Kabutey Hayford Kwasi, a teacher of Social Studies at Akuse Methodist Senior High School was honored as the overall best teacher.
Felix Ametepe, a teacher at Oborpa Gyekity M/A Basic School, won the rural teacher award and urged the government to provide basic amenities such as good roads, internet access, mobile networks, and accommodation to encourage more teachers to accept postings in rural areas.
Samuel Amponsah, Associate Professor and Head of the Distance Education Department at the University of Ghana, commended the government’s decision to update the curriculum to a 21st-century learning module. He emphasized the need for better teacher remuneration to address the high attrition rate within the profession.
The event received substantial financial and material support from the Municipal Chief Executive for Lower Manya Krobo, Simon Kwaku Tetteh, and the Member of Parliament, Ebenezer Oklaitey Terlarbi, underscoring the importance of recognizing and rewarding the dedication of educators in the municipality.
