On Monday, 9th September 2024, President Akufo-Addo delivered his final address as President of the Republic to the Ghana Bar Association.
According to him, his journey in public service began within the legal profession, and it is among his colleagues at the Bar that he has always felt most at home.
He said the values of justice, equity, and the rule of law that we uphold as lawyers have been the guiding principles of his leadership as President, and he was grateful for the opportunity to serve our beloved country.
“As I reflected on my career, both as a lawyer and as President, I was reminded of the critical role the Bar has played in shaping my worldview and my commitment to democracy.
From my early years as a young lawyer in the 1970s to the legal battles during the turbulent days of military rule, the law has always been my tool for defending the rights and freedoms of Ghanaians. It has been my privilege to carry that same dedication to justice into the highest office of the land.
My presidency, in many ways, has been a continuation of my devotion to the rule of law. I have worked to ensure that transparency, accountability, and justice remain at the heart of our governance structures. As I prepare to hand over the reins of leadership, I am confident that the legal frameworks we have strengthened will continue to serve Ghana well in the years to come.
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Ghana Bar Association and all Ghanaians for their support over the past seven-and-a-half years. It has been an honour to serve as President, and I am proud of the progress we have made together. Let us continue to uphold the principles of justice, fairness and democracy for the good of our nation” President Akufo-Addo stated.
