Vice President and flagbearer of the ruling NPP, Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has been challenged to deal with the illegal mining menace in the country now, if truly he as the will power to do so.
Kofi Agbeko Leh, a political activist is of the view the actions and comments of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has exposed his hypocrisy as the NPP government has failed in addressing the problem of illegal mining.
According to him, the NPP under the watch of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia gave out permits to party loyalists who have little or no experience in mining, thereby leading to the challenges Ghana faces now.
Read his statement below:
Dr. Bawumia’s Hypocrisy and Failed Accountability*
Dr. Bawumia’s recent statements about “trial and error” in small-scale mining only highlight the hypocrisy of his government’s actions. It was under his administration that party loyalists were handpicked, given a mere three months of training at UMAT, and issued licenses to operate without proper surface mining expertise. These inadequately trained individuals have wreaked havoc on Ghana’s water bodies, and now, Bawumia promises to “change the narrative” if elected.
But why wait? If he truly has better policies, he should implement them now. Or is he implying that his influence in the ruling NPP government is irrelevant? For seven years, he stayed in his role, witnessing the destruction, without resigning or taking decisive action.
Ghanaians are tired of Bawumia taking credit for policies that yield some success—most of which were initiated by the previous NDC government—while distancing himself from the failures of his administration. His hypocrisy was exposed when GRA staff revealed that, as Head of the Economic Management Team, he was responsible for setting tax targets, contradicting his public condemnation of high taxes. It is time for accountability, not empty promises.
