One area in Ghana with the increasing proportion of people with mental health issues is Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital.
Although some residents claim to come from elsewhere and have relocated to Koforidua.
Residents speaking to Bryt fm reporters suggested that mentally challenged people (also known as mad people) should be housed in a confined location and that the government should form a committee to oversee this task.
“The mentally challenged should be kept off the streets” according to a woman.
She suggested the police should get involved in the operation to protect individuals because she was almost assaulted by a ‘mad man’ sometime ago.
Another woman purportedly stated that majority of the patients at mental hospitals like Panatang have been released onto the streets as most facilities find it difficult in providing food and medication for them.
“The government ought to take action and guarantee that these individuals are cared for and protected until they get well. Despite their mental illness, these individuals still have hope” other residents stated.
