Farmers in the Pakro and Agyinase-Piem communities of Akuapem South in Ghana’s Eastern Region have called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to address the issue of illegal mining, or galamsey, when the party assumes office in 2025.
According to the farmers, the Densu River, a crucial source of irrigation for their crops, has been heavily polluted by chemicals used in illegal mining activities, leading to significant declines in agricultural productivity.
Crops, particularly okra and other vegetables, are withering, and yields have drastically reduced due to the contamination.
The farmers assured the Running mate of the NDC during her campaign tour in the community on Tuesday that, they are going to vote massively for the party so that it end galamsey to safeguard their farms.
The farmers also expressed concerns about not only the environmental degradation but also the poor state of roads, which hinders the transportation of farm produce.
Local traditional leaders, including Nana Ahingua II and his Queen Mother, further requested the NDC to complete a CHPS (Community-based Health Planning and Services) compound that was initiated under the previous John Mahama administration but has since been abandoned.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang assured the community that the NDC prioritizes development and encouraged them to vote for the party to ensure the provision of better roads, water facilities, and healthcare services.
Lawrencia Dziwornu, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Akuapem South, also promised to drive development in the area, pledging to create 2,000 jobs, economically empower women, and facilitate opportunities both home and abroad.
Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, who was Ghana’s first female Vice Chancellor of a University is embarking on a two day campaign tour of the Eastern Region.
