The Deputy Minister for Works and Housing, Dr. Prince Hamid Armah, MP launched Ghana’s Roadmap outlining how the country intend to significantly minimize emissions from the built and construction sectors of the economy through the adoption and usage of low carbon building or construction materials by 2050.
In November 2023, the Ministry with support from UN-Habitat, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) initiated the “Transforming the Built Environment through Sustainable Materials” programme, to address the environmental impacts of the built environment in Ghana.
According to a United Nations Environment Programme (2022), the building and construction sector is by far the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, accounting for a staggering 37% of global emissions with the production and use of building materials such as cement, steel, and aluminum having a significant carbon footprints.
These statistics highlight the urgent need for us to mitigate the environmental impact of the construction industry.
The launch of the Roadmap derived from this initiative reaffirms our commitment to building sustainable, resilient, and healthy communities.
