The Ministry of Health has officially launched two groundbreaking documents that will safeguard public health and address critical health challenges.
The documents include the National Genomic Surveillance Strategy for Pathogens of Pandemic Potential (2024-2028) and the National Strategy for the Elimination of Trans-Fatty Acids from Ghana’s Food Supply (2025-2030).
Addressing participants in his keynote address, Alhaji Hafez Adam, the Chief director at the Ministry, highlighted the pivotal role of genomic surveillance in responding to infectious diseases by stating that through research and analysis, scientists can gain valuable insights into pathogens origins, transmission patterns, and potential for drug resistance.
“This information is essential for developing effective prevention strategies, diagnostic tools, and targeted treatments, which have proven critical in the fight against diseases like COVID-19,’’ he added.
Alhaji Hafez Adam also explained that the National Genomic Surveillance Strategy will provide strategic direction over the next five years, with a focus on five key objectives. These objectives aim to enhance the public health system’s capacity for pathogen genomic surveillance by integrating advancements in research and technology.
