In an effort to digitize healthcare delivery in the country, the Ministry of Health, supported by the Government of Ghana, has commissioned the National E-Health project also known as the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS) in Accra.
This project, an integrated Electronic Medical Record, aims to facilitate systems and give the health system a better upgrade.
It also seeks to improve the management of health data from sources of storage, it will also provide critical but easy access to information for decision-making.
Before LHIMS was deployed, there were issues with quick access to patient records, moving records between service points, and outdated systems. Now, The LHIMS system is used in major hospitals and health centers across all 16 regions, helping improve access to patient records, and revenue tracking.
The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in a keynote address, highlighted recent advancements in Ghana’s health sector, including the Ghana Card at Birth project, the national e-pharmacy platform, and the LightWave Health Information Management System (LHIMS). He expressed enthusiasm for the LHIMS initiative, emphasizing its importance to the nation’s healthcare infrastructure.
Dr. Bawumia noted that LHIMS has played a key role in providing efficient and effective healthcare over the past six years. He identified security, reliability, and availability as the core pillars of LHIMS. The system, he stated, has become a backbone for integrating various services and operations across health facilities, resulting in reduced patient waiting times and better visibility of hospital funds.
