Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer for MTN Ghana, Mrs Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe emphasized on empowering and supporting communities to get well livelihood.
According to her, MTN Ghana foundation has 3 keys they focus on, that is health, education and economic empowerment , and this is to helps communities by initiating them to get jobs for livelihood.
Speaking in an interview with mybrytfmonline, Mrs. Wiafe made these assertions.
“Unemployment ate is so high that the youth are not getting jobs, and due to that , we have come to support them all and our focus is to support businesses, led by Youth, Women, or persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with business development services and funding to grow their businesses because MTN believes in inclusion”.
The MTN Ghana SME Support Programme is a legacy project of MTN Ghana designed as part of its 25th Anniversary celebrations.
Mrs. Wiafe admitted that there have been some effects on the assistance they have provided thus far. “The impact has been excellent because they were able to grow and expand their businesses last year thanks to the support we provided, which is exactly what we expected.”
The project is the result of the collaboration between the enterprise support group Innohub Foundation and the MTN Ghana Foundation.
Innohub’s role in the program, which includes discovering firms, screening and educating participants, and overseeing the distribution of funding, was described by Nelson Amo, Executive Director of the Innohub Foundation.
“ Our aim is to help small businesses led by women, youth and differently abled to train them and help them with capital for them to be able to expand their businesses”.
Mr Amo added that , “Normally we work through groups so for instance the disabled groups, women group do that we can help them by going to them and engaging them in orientation but for the youth and not, since now they are mostly familiar with the social media, we don’t go to them directly but rather engaging them on different platforms like the linked-in among others”.
“We began last year for the target to do 100 business every year with the target of 500 every 5 years but we had a notice that the 100 wasn’t enough so last year we did 150 and I know by two years we will do like 300 so I definitely by 5 years we will increase it “.
