Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) act have been denounced by the minority in Parliament as illegal and a threat to the nation’s judicial system.
John Darko, the Suame MP, attacked ORAL team during a press conference on Wednesday, January 15, saying that no respectable nation would take it into consideration.
According to him, the creation of ORAL is against the Constitution and compromises the power of legally established agencies like the Office of the Special Prosecutor, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), and the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
“It is concerning, and we want the people of Ghana to know that no serious country will entertain anything such as this,” he noted.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) government launched ORAL as a project to find, look into, and retrieve public property that is thought to have been stolen by former Akufo-Addo administration officials. Theft of property, cash, automobiles, and questionable contracts are among the accusations.
Numerous suspected cases that are presently being investigated have been submitted to the committee. The Attorney General will be provided with the results for potential prosecution and legal action.
Mr. Darko criticized Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General’s (AG) nominee, for supporting ORAL, which the minority says operates outside the bounds of the constitution.
“AG nominee justified the unconstitutional establishment and putting together of people who go about harassing former government officials. We believe that the establishment of ORAL violates and flies in the face of our Constitution, and so one would have expected that a law professor in the person of Dr Ayine would have condemned it but rather, he justified it.’
The Minority also called on former government officials to avoid any interactions with ORAL, calling its activities illegal and disruptive.
“If you are a former government official and receive an invitation from ORAL, our advice is simple: boycott it. We refuse to recognise this entity because constitutionally mandated bodies already exist to investigate any alleged misdeeds,” he said.
