Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister-Designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, has emphasized how crucial it is to restore the Komenda Sugar Factory to help the people of Ghana.
A chronic issue that has seriously hampered the factory’s activities is the lack of raw materials, which has kept it idle.
Ofosu-Adjare emphasized the significance of updating the factory as a vital step in lowering the country’s dependency on sugar imports during her January 22 appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
To evaluate the factory’s current state and guarantee its conversion into a fully functional and significant asset for the nation, she pledged to collaborate closely with the pertinent ministries.
“I have been told that as we speak, the Komenda Sugar Factory is not operational and one of the major challenges the factory has suffered is the lack of raw materials to feed that industry and some missing parts.
“I have also been told that monies were released to solve these problems. And the total health of the factory should be done after an evaluation. So I will work to ensure we know the actual health of the factory.
“But it’s obvious we need that factory to work for the benefit of Ghanaians because we are importing about half a million dollars worth of sugar into the country. And so once I take office, I will work together with the ministry to ensure we assess the health of the factor and ensure Ghana benefits from that monumental project.”
