Residents of Tsremati Yoyim a farming community in Yilo Krobo Municipality carry pregnant women in labor and critically ill persons in a locally made stretcher to descend a rocky mountain to a hospital in nearby towns due to absent of road.
The phenomenon has led to needless deaths in the community with recent one been a young lady who died while being carried to hospital after she suddenly fell sick.
Due to this, residents have defied a ban on public gathering and social distancing directive as a way of containing the spread of Coronavirus by demonstrating over their plight.
According to the residents, governments have failed to fulfill promises of constructing a road to the communities on the mountain making them more impoverished.
Tsremati Yoyim and its neighboring Farming communities such as Kokofu, Wrekonya, Dorguanor with total Population of about 6,000 inhabitants, are known as the food basket of the municipality, but there is no road network linking the communities to the market centers, hence farm produces such as vegetables, cassava, and plantain mostly rot in the bush.
Vida Dede, a female Farmer told mybrytfmonline.com that “women and children in this community are feeling the brunt of lack of road. When you are in labor or sick, you are carried on Akpasa (a locally made stretcher) to descend this rocky mountain before you can access healthcare. We have lost many pregnant women and sick people in this community. Politicians have always been deceiving us to vote for them but after voting they don’t fulfill their promise to us. This year, we are not going to vote. No road, no vote.”
