Rev. Seth Adu, the Headmaster of Dormaa Ahenkro Presbyterian Junior High School and Minister In-Charge of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Grace Congregation- Dormaa Ahenkro, has acknowledged that excessive punishment, which at times inflicts harm upon students, led to the abolition of corporal punishment.
However, he lamented that this decision has adversely affected students, resulting in examination malpractice, incidents of students harming their peers, widespread apathy, and the indiscriminate repetition of students regardless of their academic performance.
Reverend Adu asserted that the eradication of corporal punishment has not benefitted the students, and thus, it should be reinstated with caution to instill a sense of seriousness and discipline among students.
Additionally, he suggested establishing a threshold for academic grades to ensure that only deserving students progress to higher levels of education
Reverend Seth Adu urged parents, guardians, religious leaders, and churches to join forces with educators, who are striving diligently to aid the children. He implored parents not to permit their wards to indulge in television viewing but to support their learning at home. He asserted that contemporary syllabi predominantly emphasize cultivating a courteous lifestyle to integrate seamlessly into society, thus appealing to the government and other stakeholders to partake in molding a brighter future for the youth.
